In Memory Of...

Deputy William J. Bender

Deputy Bender was killed as a result of an automobile accident, while en route to set up a road block. The road block was being set-up in response to an escape from a nearby jail.

Deputy Bender was survived by his wife, daughter, and son. His son, Trooper William R. Bender, was killed in the line of duty on 11-20-1982 while working for the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Deputy Winfield was shot and killed after having been dispatched to check on a disabled vehicle. Upon arrival in the area of the vehicle, Deputy Winfield came in contact with two individuals walking alongside of the roadway and made contact with them. Dispatch had no further contact with Deputy Winfield.

Deputy Winfield's cruiser was discovered a short time later, flipped over in a nearby ravine. Deputy Winfield was discovered inside of the cruiser, killed by a single gunshot wound to the head.

Following a massive manhunt involving multiple agencies, two subjects were eventually apprehended and charged with aggravated murder. One subject plead guilty to Obstruction of Justice and received 2 years probation. The shooter plead guilty to aggravated murder and received 40 years to life.

Deputy Winfield was survived by his wife and two young sons. His father Detective Rick Winfield and brother Ptrl. Cory Winfield are both employed by the Marion City Police Department.
