MAN ARRESTED FOR AGGRAVATED ROBBERY PDF Print E-mail
Written by Major Jeff Cline
Thursday, 29 November 2012

On 11/28/2012 at 3:04pm the Marion County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Scioto Shoe Mart, 206 Jamesway Drive. The complainant advised that they had a shoplifting incident in progress and that the suspect was fighting with an employee. The responding deputy arrived and saw that the suspect was still actively fighting with a store employee. The deputy intervened and attempted to place the suspect under arrest when he began to resist the deputy. The suspect, later identified as 34-year old Harold Ray Smith, pulled away from the deputy and then spun around in an attempt to flee the scene. The deputy took Smith to the ground, reacquired control of him and placed him in handcuffs. When asked by the deputy Smith refused to say who he was and instead gave a false name. Smith indicated that at the time of this incident he had no permanent address and was homeless.

Employees stated that Smith was caught in the act of stealing a pair of shoes. When he was approached by an employee Smith then brandished a pocket knife and pointed it at the employees. One employee wrestled Smith to the ground and the knife was knocked away from him. The employee continued to struggle with Smith as Smith punched him in the face and neck. After the incident was over, neither the employee nor Smith required medical attention.

Smith was taken to the Marion County Correctional Center where his true identity was learned. Smith was arrested for aggravated robbery, resisting arrest, and obstruction of official business. In addition to these charges Smith also had three (3) outstanding warrants for his arrest for theft, escape, and failure to appear. Smith is also on parole and his parole officer was notified of this incident. This case was forwarded to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for review of all the charges.
