On August 18th at approximately 12:05pm, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the CSX railroad police about a report of subjects being seen riding on the outside of railroad cars on a northbound CSX train.  The sheriff’s office also received a similar call from the Marion City Police Department.  The train, which consisted of open topped cars full of coal, finally stopped north of the city of Marion in the area of Hillman Ford Road and Kenton Galion Road.  Railroad personnel advised that they had seen 5 suspects jump from the stopped train and go into nearby woods.  Deputies checked the area but the suspects were not located.

At approximately 2:39pm, CSX railroad police advised that the train was about to leave the area when the engineer observed the 5 suspects run out of the woods and climb back into a coal car.  Deputies responded back to the train and walked to the area of the car that the suspects had been seen climbing into.  The Marion County Sheriff’s Office Air Support Unit was airborne in the area, after just returning from an out of county mission.  The helicopter overflew the train and observed the suspects in the coal car.  The helicopter guided deputies on the ground to the correct car.  Deputies made contact with the 5 suspects hiding in the coal car and they were all taken into custody.  The suspects indicated that they had no money, and were homeless.     They said they had gotten on the train that morning in Columbus and were attempting to go to Texas.

Arrested were: 27 year old Audra L. Elfrey of Lancaster (Ohio), 18 year old Tyler J. Harmon of Ashville (Ohio), 25 year old William E. Selfridge of Kenai (Alaska), 18 year old Richard P. Burcham of Fort Gay (West Virginia) and 32 year old Jason M. Conrad of San Antonio (Texas).

All 5 suspects were charged with Criminal Trespass on a Railroad Car, which is a first degree misdemeanor.  William Selfridge was also charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, which is a first degree misdemeanor.  Additionally, Audra Elfrey is being held on a misdemeanor arrest warrant from Licking County for Falsification.
